Discussion Four

The final discussions for this module will serve two functions. The first is a forum to ask and answer questions of all kinds about the final work for this course. If you have problems analyzing your data, or writing conclusions, you will be able to get some assistance here among your instructor and classmates.
The second posting serves as the class presentation for your action research project. This discussion requires that you present your final project in Power Point format and that you respond to at least two classmates’ projects with several thoughtful comments connecting the work they did with something in your project. If you create your PowerPoint in Google Slides, you can easily post the link to this discusion.  Please ask if you need help finding google slides. See the due dates for posting your AR Presentation to the discussion board and responding to your colleagues in the Course Schedule

  1. Hello all, is the powerpoint due on the sames day as the draft of the final report?
    Thank you.

  2. That is how I understood it. I was going to have it submitted the same day I sent my draft...then I believe there is a week for comments in the discussion....so if I am mistaken please someone let me know!!!

  3. According to our course schedule, the Final Report and PPT submission are both due to TaskStream by April 29th. The DRAFT of the final report is due April 15th. It says to continuing working on the PowerPoint during the weeks leading up to April 29th! Hope this helps!

  7. I think as long as the Power Point covers all the necessary items, it should be fine. Does the Power Point need to be posted in this Discussion when we have finished it? I know it's due along with the final report into Taskstream, but I don't think there is a separate discussion board for them.

  8. how long is everybody's paper turning out to be? I'm a little on the wordy side so I don't mind being a page or 2 over, but mine is getting ridiculous.
Also- I'm including a sort of works "referenced" page/annotated bibliography because I am doing some coding. For each entry, I am just including the commentary that helped me. Is that enough or should I just scrap that bit altogether. I don't think it is in me to do a full summary of each one!!

    1. Your research focus is one I am especially interest in looking at more closely. I am a reading interventionist in a primary school. If you look at level A, B, C, and D books, most of the words in them are sight words. Sight words are essential to reading and researching the topic is so smart!

You collected a lot of data and did an excellent job illustrating your findings in the graphs.

I implemented an explicit direct instruction strategy in my research project, too. Prior to doing my project, I was not a big fan of this type of instruction. But, I have come to appreciate its place in my professional practice for some children sometime. From your conclusion, it looks like you might feel the same way.

      Excellent work and presentation!

    2. Bethany,
Your extensive pre-lesson assessments gave you a detailed picture of your students' current performance concerning basic vocabulary, phonics, and fluency. What a great website EasyCBM is to facilitate your strategy implementation with testing materials. The detailed analysis it provides also allows you to pinpoint any student improvement and allows you to encourage and support each student in an individualized manner.

      Delete
    3. Bethany,
I like how you chose to focus on improving sight words as your action research. As special education teachers, we know that this is an area that our students struggle with, and memorizing sight words can limit some of the stress students have when reading. Easy CBM is a wonderful program. I like using it with my students at Fairview. It makes it easy to track student progress and integrate interventions in the lesson. I noticed that one of your students did not show progress during the implementation because of their ability to focus. I think it would be helpful in the future to use possible a kinestetic strategy to keep him moving and interested in the lesson. Just a thought. Well done!

  16. For the draft that is due into TaskStream on the 15th, do we need to submit the PPT there as well, or is that due into this discussion board by the 29th? The way I understand is that a written draft report is due the 15th into TaskStream, and then a revised report and the PPT are due the 29? I just wanted to be sure I'm not missing anything!

    1. I found your research very interesting and informative. Teaching sight words is something all elementary teachers, especially those in k-2, struggle with every year. This is even more challenging for reading interventionists.

I was surprised by boys learning better with worksheets and flashcards and girls learning better through games. I would have guessed the exact opposite.

I liked your “students excluded and limitations” slide. This is something I had not given a lot of thought about; but, discovered I needed to as my research progressed. Do you include special education students or students with several absences? I struggled with these questions. I like the way you handled it.

      Excellent work!

    2. Angela,

your topic was similar to mine. This is really great stuff! I found it particularly interesting how you split your results by gender, very interesting data there!
Well done presenting your data, I found it easy to follow and clear. Good job and Good Luck in the future!

      Delete
    3. I like that you divided your data up by gender and I also found it interesting that the results showed that the boys learned better with the flash cards and worksheets. I think that makes sense depending on the group of students and their levels of concentration.

    4. Your research was very interesting, Angela.

You hade a great range of activities and games to use with the students. I am sure they enjoyed learning from these activities. It may just be my thought process, but I was amazed that the boys did better with flashcards as opposed to games. I guess maybe I see boys being more hands on in learning and interest.
My school has also had issues with absences. The sicknesses going around among other things have really hindered school this year for students and teachers.
Your students have shown great improvement. I think your finding about a balanced approach is golden for your students and your school. Keep up the good work.

But, I suggest you take another look at your Conclusion, it needs some editing. Those are easy errors to make and to fix. Connie

    2. Hey Kelly! It is amazing to me that a student you currently have in class had made it to you (in middle school) with poor sight word recognition and on a 2nd or 3rd grade level! How sad is that! Anyway, one of my favorite things from your PowerPoint is how you added your schedule of working with your student so we can see the timeline of activities being conducted! Nice addition! I saw where you said her improvements weren't leaps and bounds like you had hoped, but at least she did improve some! Some progress is better than none! Nice work!

    3. Kelly,
Your powerpoint looks great and was visually interesting and easy to follow. It is truly unique to have the opportunity to focus solely on one student for an extended period of time. This allows you better control of material, better time management, and ability to gauge the student's comprehension. At the same time it would be challenging to learn the strategy implementation did not advance your student. Although you student did not advance as dramatically as you had hoped, without your efforts the student would have gained no improvement.

I think it is great that you were able to work with a student one-on-one. I know that when I did my interviews with students, it went better when I was able to just sit and talk with them rather than the entire class. By looking at their sight words more often and by giving them that attention you definitely saw a positive change. I am so glad that their scores went up. I think by helping them now they will learn to love reading when they get older. Great job!

    7. Kelly,
I love the color scheme of your presentation. It draws the eye but does not overshadow your data.

I like that you included the schedule for working with your students and it is very true that consistence matters. It seems that consistency really paid off for your student. Any growth at all is an excellent thing and a great stepping stone to more improvement.
Very nice god and keep up the good work.

    8. Kelly,
First of all, I admire your work ethic by taking one of our WI students one-on-one and providing her with that “extra” push and support! I think we both agree that our students desperately need that! Secondly, I was impressed with your organization and layout of the project! You made the data very easy to understand and displayed in it a way that was “readable” even to a non-reading specialist/teacher. Also, I enjoyed the “bigger” accomplishment of the project in my opinion, “She was happy to be chosen to help the teacher and this motivated her to move forward.” This I feel is and was the real win to your project! You motivated and pleased the student to want to learn more… and she is going to continue to work with you on this; which is awesome!

      Nice Work, Kelly!

    4. Hello, Connie! I enjoyed your presentation. Like Stephanie, I was surprised by how much the students improved. I must admit that I am not a huge fan of phonics. I tend to have more of a top down view to reading instruction. his is probably because I was not a phonetic learner as a child. I learned to read using more of a whole language approach. Also, I teach upper elementary, so phonics is not a primary focus. However, your results were fantastic. I am sure that you were excited to see your students make such gains. I thought your presentation was very well done, and I enjoyed seeing a different perspective on reading instruction!

I think it is neat that none of your students chose "no" for the question about coming to library and having trouble finding what they are looking for! Your topic was very interesting! When I was in high school, I visited the library maybe five times in all the years I was there. Being an avid reader, I think that's a shame looking back. I love that you are trying to prevent such a thing from happening by getting feedback from your students. You got some great insight into student opinions, and now can use that data to make the library more attractive to your students. If our librarian in high school had done such a thing, I am sure I'd have been much more willing to visit and check out books. Very nice project!

    1. I really liked your presentation and your project was something that every school has. I have never thought about low income students having reading supplies throughout the summer to help them for the next school year. Reading is so important for all students, but especially students in Elementary school. I wonder what we can do as teachers to help provide them with more reading resources throughout the summer? Great job!

    2. I found your presentation and project very interesting. Majority of the students at my school come from low-socioeconomic homes. We usually expect the students to slide back at least one reading level over the summer. Very rarely do we have students move up. Occasionally we have students remain the same. I found it interesting that majority of the students coming from low-socioeconomic homes fell back in reading over summer break. I wonder if the 3 students who stayed the same or moved up attended some type of summer reading program, such as Energy Express? Your project was very interesting! Great Job!

    3. Logan,
I appreciated your topic of study because it applies so much to my school and students also! I love the quote you chose to include in your PowerPoint: it is very relevant to the topic. From your results, it definitely appears that there is a relation between low socioeconomic status and the summer slide. Generally at the beginning of the school year, we see students who move backward in reading level. Angela made a great point about summer reading programs: how helpful are they to preventing such backslides at the beginning of the year? That would be a neat action research project in itself! Nice work!

I too can relate with one of the problems you ran into during study hall with your athletes wanting to talk to you. If I have to cover lunch detention some of the students think since I am not the normal lunch detention teacher that they can “chat”. I quickly have to nip that in the bud.

I felt that your implementation was well thought through and well organized. You held your athletes accountable throughout the semester, rather than merely one time at the end. I am glad to see that this research was a success for you and your athletes. Research that benefits both parties is always a bit more rewarding.

    1. Your research question is interesting. In the college classes that I teach (math), most faculty prefer to teach the morning sections rather than the 1 pm and 2:30 pm classes. We have always said that the afternoon sections just have "worse" students (and by worse, we mean less motivated). We've never done any research into this, but your research project does lend some credence to our theory.

Regarding your powerpoint, I think it would have been helpful to see the am and pm results on the same slide, so that I could easily compare - or maybe put the information in a table, again for a quick visual comparison.

Probably not though, so many schools are bringing in Ipads now to almost every classroom, this next generation is going to be a lot more technology savvy than mine. I hope that you are able to get the funding to add the additional kindles to the library.

I found this project to be very interesting. I myself have a Kindle but prefer to read a hard copy. Holding the book in my hand and being able to feel the pages under my fingers in more appealing to me then using my Kindle. This being said, my teenage daughter prefer to use her IPAD to read on then on books. I wonder if age has an impact on this. I agree with you in your report when you stated that having more Kindles would have changed the outcome. Trying to use only 4 with that number of students must have been difficult. I am sure if you had more the results would have been different but I wonder what those results would have been. Great Job.

I found that with focusing on retell and summarizing of text that students increased in scores. I really like how you organized your data and I'm glad that you found positive outcomes also.

    2. Holly I absolutely loved your presentation!!! It was well organized and I like that in your research you used a control group. I think that 53% of students reading proficiently actually isnt a bad number. Loved seeing the gains your students made!!!

    1. Jessica,
Until looking at and reading you powerpoint I had never heard of the SCROL method for reading comprehension. However, after reading your descriptions it is similar to a system we use at my school. I think that giving students a strategy to use to focus on their comprehension is a great idea. This helps to ensure they find all the information they need to fully grasp what they are reading or doing. I like how in you project you had your students use the skills from previous lessons and put them together to complete the the project. It appears to be a very engaging activity for your students and since the post-test almost doubled the pre-test it is obvious that this strategy was a success for you students. Great Job!!

    1. Hey there Kristina,
Your link is saying I do not have permission to view the presentation. When you click on your presentation there is a button that says share, when you click that it generates a public sharing link. I am not tech savvy, and hope this helps, if not I'm sorry.

    1. Wow, I think your tool bar is amazing. I can see how this would be so helpful to students so that they know what type of errors they consistently make. Having them correct their errors is also extremely valuable as a teaching/learning tool so having it available to them electronically is great.

Great job! I'm quite impressed :)

    1. It seems strange that scores went down after the preassessment. In my opinion you cannot replace direct instruction by a teacher.

    2. Holly, I was interested to see the results of your study because when I was working as a substitute most recently in NY, the students in certain classrooms had acquired iPads for the classroom. I would observe the students and many times they were actively engaged with the lesson on IXL but there were also many times that they were doing other things on the iPad that they should not have been doing at that time. I also am sort of surprised that they did not show improvement but this to me is evidence that more individual teaching may need to occur for these students. Great work.

    3. Wow! What a huge difference direct instruction makes. One major consideration is that you are working with learning disabled students. In my developmental classes, I feel that a lot of times, technology is just another skill-set I have to instruct on. I am actually thinking about adding it to the outcomes of my courses!
I also wonder which program was more rigorous? The IXL or the Khan- only because it looks like they missed fewer with the Khan courses.
This is an interesting study in the face of such heavy emphasis on the inclusion of technology in our courses!!
      Great job!

I did it a little differently, by recording audio as if I was actually presenting the information. Fast-forward if you don't want to listen to it all! (It is only 16 minutes long, but I'm sure you have better things to do with your time.)

    1. Wow- this is an amazing and professional job as always. I really envy your PowerPoint skills.
I really like the way you worked with different methods. I know that color-coding works well for me as a student and an instructor. I bring my own color-coded wipe off markers to class each time and pass them out when I am using them.
You have very obviously put a lot of work into the preparation of the notes prior to class for the partial option. I see that your students least preferred the verbal cues, but I like that best of all because it requires them to do more on their own.
This is a really well thought out project. Your PowerPoint is very clear and easy to follow.
      Excellent job!

    1. Wow what amazing results. I will defiantly keep this in mind when working with fluency and sight words. I'm glad your research had such success. Great Job!

    2. Hi Vanessa, I also chose to focus on reading fluency. I feel that it is the most commonly overlooked and undervalued component of reading. Your results appeared to be favorable. Repeated expose to the sight words appeared to have positive effect on fluency in all three weeks. I was just wondering how this method would fair in terms of long term retention. For example, if after repeated exposure you don't practice them for a while, and then test those same words would they still show improvement from the initial pretest. I was wondering this with the method I chose as well. Anyhow, nice presentation. I enjoyed viewing it, and I hope that you continue to find successful methods to help your students become better readers!

    3. Hello Vanessa,
Reading fluency is very important so I'm glad that you chose to work on frequent exposure of sight words. The student that you chose to focus on during this assignment was extremely low and needed the extra exposure. I am sure that working with him one on one was very beneficial. I know that it is hard to provide the extra support for individuals, but the student more than doubled while you working with him/her. That is success in my opinion. Hopefully, you are able to continue working on him/her so that they can continue to make improvements.

    1. I really like your research! It shows how using an incentive can work to the better of teaching. Often teachers don't keep up with incentive so students don't show any excitement in it and don't work for the incentive. I'm excited that this research worked for you and that you had overall success!
