Module Three

In this discussion we will focus on any questions you may have about writing the Literature Review as well as supporting each other as we implement the action research project itself.

  1. Is there a specific number of resources we should use in our review? Is there a minimum or maximum?

    1. She said that we need a minimum of at least five different resources in our literature review! I don't think there is a maximum number for use :)

    2. If you look at taskstream where we submit the review it says 3-5 articles. The more the better though.

    3. Hey Kel, I would suggest using five SOLID resources. I tried to choose the five that most reflected the research I was doing. I had a list if 7-8 , but when I went back and looked into them more thoroughly I found that only 5 or 6 were actually "sound" and pertained to my specific research.
      Hope that helps!

    6. I thought I read 8 somewhere...

    7. The rubric and the step by step guide states 8 sources. The review of literature in module 3 states 3-5 resources. I know in undergrad, we were only required to have 3 resources.

  2. From my understanding of what I read, we are to utilize five peer-reviewed scholarly resources.

  3. I know that for a Literature Review, we must synthesize existing knowledge on a topic we have chosen that summarizes data and analyzes information that either supports or disproves the goal of the Action Research. My issue is the fact that I have been trying to discern the actual difference between a procedure and method, since both normally are utilized interchangeably. I have concluded that a procedure describes what the activity is, who is involved with the activity and when and where it will take place. On the other hand, a method is how the activity will be carried out by utilizing tools and techniques that support or not support what you are trying to determine and/or assess. My question is not about the review itself, but to determine which procedure(s) I should utilize for my topic. I need to narrow it down, so if anyone can assist, that would be wonderful.

    1. Remind me again as to what your topic is. I don't know if I can be of help, but I can certainly try!

  4. For my questions concerning the literature review, I was double checking to make sure that everyone is including resources on both sides of the fence concerning your topics. I know that I have found resources that both agree and disagree with my topic, and I know that we are supposed to be biased when proposing a research question. It has been very interesting to see how the different sides support their ideas using research! I have enjoyed reading these journals about my topic. It does kind of make you stand back and look at it from both sides.

    1. Yes, you are supposed to include information for both sides. I am also finding information on the effectiveness of both strategies I plan to address. I agree it is interesting to look at the different views. I can't wait to review the results from everyone's research!

    2. I am planning to include information from both sides in my literature review. I will most likely have an even number of sources listed, so I can keep the amount of sources per side the same. It's definitely interesting to see the differing viewpoints offered around the same topic. I hadn't thought about my project having multiple viewpoints, so this research is helpful for me to be able to look at things in different ways.

      Delete
    3. My project is using the RAP strategy to help identify the main idea of a passage. For my literature review, I used articles that focused on different strategies to help students with this area of focus. One was using the RAP strategy, while the others were different strategies. All the articles focused on strategies to help students with identifying the main idea. I looked through each source to help decide what would work best for my student's individual needs. Right or wrong, I am not sure, but I did not use literature from both sides. I used literature focusing on my topic and went from there.

    4. Good point Logan!! I'm glad you pointed this out. I only have research that is supportive.

      Delete
    5. Very interesting conversation you guys. It is true that articles that do not support your strategy can be instructive and could assist you in avoiding pitfalls. I have found it particularly challenging to locate articles, supportive or not, that address my action research topic of graphing, especially in a science classroom. Most of the articles I found on graphing address the strictly math function they serve and very few articles actually address the interpretation of graphs in general.

    6. Stephanie I only used articles that supported my topic as well.

  6. For the implementation of your action research project, what are you doing about absences? Are you including students who are absent in the results? With all of the germs going around, I am worried a couple of the students will be out for more than one day. I do not feel I should include the students who are absent from instruction, but considering including students who miss only one day. Another concern is the number of students I will have for the study if I eliminate ALL students who have any absences during the research. What are your plans and how do you plan on handling absences?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's a good question, Angela. I think I am just going to calculate results without taking those into consideration, unless the absences create a bias between student numbers in my groups. There have been a lot of kids out lately!

      Delete
    2. I would not look at the students that have been absent a lot throughout your project. They won't be given the instruction that the others have been giving. I think a lot of students are missing throughout the state. Our school is awful right now with students being absent.

      Delete
    3. My class has been wiped out by the flu and I have had a huge problem with them making up the stuff/activities for my research. But, I actually just stopped and restarted my research last Friday because so many have been in and out.

      Delete
    4. I have only been working with 1-2 students faithfully because of absences, schedule changes, and other situations beyond my control.

      Delete
    5. I am having the same issue. Our 6th grade as a whole are cryonicly absent for no reason plus on top of those out sick. It will be very interesting to say the least.

      Delete
    6. Several of my students have attendance issues as well. I am going to do individual student reports, so I guess I will just make a note in their result section. I think this is the best way for me so that I can make sure it doesn't throw the results of everyone else off to because of student absences.

      Delete
    7. I am working my project with my block 4 class of 18 students. I am averaging all scores including zeros (not from absences) but from a student who refused to complete his work. My results will hopefully provide a true picture of class room activity and productivity. I agree the results section would be the place to make a note addressing any anomalies. With absences this could be an opportunity to work in some peer-mentoring to help catch up absent students, also allowing instructed students to practice and reinforce your selected strategy.

  7. I had a question relating to how long and often research is being conducted. I am collecting data twice a week for a six week period (as of now) to get the information recorded promptly, but I was concerned about having enough sessions with my students for valid results. I was thinking that maybe I should meet with them one more day a week to get more accurate data. What are everyone's thoughts, and how is data being collected for your own research?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. During the week 1, I conducted pretests. Then weeks 2-6 I am implementing my strategy (2 thirty minute sessions each week). Week 7 I plan to give posttests. Hopefully, I can stick to that timeline.
Like you said, the more data the more accurate your results will be. However, it is difficult to devote too much time with all of the other content we have to teach. I think that two times a week should be fine, do what you feels is best for your students. You could always continue the research after this course if you wanted to see more long term effects. Good luck with everything, Holly.

    2. Devon I am doing the same as well. I have implemented my assessments and am working with my student two days a week, a half an hour each time. I have only planned a 3 week period.

      Delete
    3. Thanks for the input! I've been able to do two sessions a week the past two weeks, but with benchmarking assessment coming up, I hope I can continue to get my Guided Reading sessions in with students. Good luck to you both, as well!

    4. I am working two days a week for 15 minute sessions and then assessing once a week to monitor progress. I also gave a pretest and plan on giving a post test.

  8. I am having students complete an interest survey about the library and talking to them one-on-one as well. I am hoping that this will be enough to complete my project. I am wanting to gain insight on students perceptive on the library and what I can do to get them more involved. For my literature review I found resources that looked at the overall use of libraries and library media specialists then focused on ways that students wanted the library to improve for other studies that have been conducted. Should that be enough? I want to make sure that my project is something that I can complete and get back results for my library as well.

  9. I am wondering how far back (in terms of date) would you use a source/article? I have been trying to stay within five years, or is that too far back?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The handout Dr. Jones provided in this module says that the majority of your sources should have been published in the past 5-10 years.

      Delete
    2. I used EbscoHost to find my articles and have been using this resource for several previous classes. You can select the timeframe of publishing, Boolean phasing for topics, you can select strictly peer reviewed, journals and/or articles, and even select the number of pages you would like in your articles. The results for your searches can be so large that it is a lengthy process, but the quality of selection makes this source worthwhile.

  10. Hi everyone - just wanted to make sure you looked at the syllabus before submitting your literature review. It says that you should add your lit review to the intro and methods document that you submitted in Mod 2.

"A Literature Review synthesizing key points related to the topic or focus of your project from five quality, scholarly research articles. You should make suggested improvements to your Introduction & Methods, add your Literature Review, and submit all three sections as one document." page 3

  12. Hi all, I am struggling to know which direction to move forward in. I believe at this point my research questions will be as follows:
Will giving fourth grade students a pretest before teaching the unit improve their scores on the posttest at the conclusion of the unit?
Did all students make at least an 80% or higher on the test?
Does giving fourth grade students a self-evaluation form and the ability to make changes to their projects before submitting improve their grades and performance?

Does anyone have any advice on how to proceed? I feel stuck should I be focusing on finding resources that show the benefits of studying about other cultures? I feel like I have bits and pieces of a project and that I do not know how to connect them. I am finding this difficult since I am not a classroom teacher and I don't have access to what is going on every day. Any advice or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

    1. I think one issue with your first discussion question is that it would require more formal research... in order to answer it properly, you'd need a control group (that doesn't take a pre-test) and a research group (that does take the pre-test). The population sample in each group would need to be similar, the delivery method similar, etc. Then, you'd need to compare the results on the post-test to see which group performed better. Perhaps rephrasing your question will help with your lit review and with your research implementation. (I tried to come up with a rephrase, but couldn't think of anything.)

Regarding the 3rd question - I think this one would be the easiest to work with. (I would only pick one question, not all three that you have listed.) Here, you can investigate whether a self-evaluation form motivates them to make improvements to their projects to (hopefully) earn better grades. To implement, I'd have them submit the project, THEN give them the self-eval form and give them the opportunity to complete the form and to resubmit the project if they determine that improvements could have been made. You could also give a survey after the re-submissions are due that asks if the self-eval form helped or not, if they would have used the form before submitting the first time, and if they would like to use the form on future project assignments.

For the lit review, you could then look for articles that have to do with self-eval forms, their effectiveness, and whether they motivate students to submit higher quality work.

Just my opinion on things... I think you have some great ideas but that you're trying to do too much at once. Perhaps that's why you're having a hard time tying it all together!

      Delete
    2. Thank you for the suggestions, I think you might be right, I am feeling like this is a lot and not knowing which way to turn. I think I will explore the self-evaluation route more in depth.

      Delete
  13. Anyone willing to offer an opinion on this?

I know we are supposed to find studies that both agree with and disagree with our proposal. However, I am finding it difficult to find research that shows that taking notes in a math class is NOT beneficial. Instead, I found several articles that discuss the benefits of different types of note-taking strategies.

Do you think this is enough?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I may not be the best person to listen to here, because I am feeling like a fish out of water but I did not see anywhere where it says that we need to find studies that agree and disagree with our proposal. I would think what you have with the different note-taking strategies is good.

      Delete
    2. I am having the same issue, Rebecca. I am not finding any resources that disagree with the reading strategy that I am implementing. I'm not sure what to do either.

      Delete
    4. I did not see any directions stating that we had to incorporate supportive or non-supportive articles in our research. But, one thing to keep in mind when researching is to look carefully at the authors, the intended audience, and their ultimate findings for possible bias. This can help you weigh the validity and its appropriates to your project.

  14. Hello all, my literature review question is concerning the "sub" headings that Dr. Jones mentions on our assignment page of Taskstream. Is she referring to direct us that it is okay if we want to sub head with the article name or citation in front of each paragraph pertaining to that specific source?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I am confused about this as well. I don't know what headings to include.

      Delete
    2. On page 61 of our text there is a sample literature review that has an example with subheadings. Maybe that is what she is referring to?

I'm not sure if this is correct or not, but I am using a couple subheadings to organize my sources according their focus, going from the broad to more narrow. For example, I am using the subheadings fluency which is the broad topic and then repeated reading, a component of my strategy.

      Delete
    3. Yes, I am using subheadings, too. I know the sample in the
text has subheading and we are assessed for having "several identifiable paragraphs." I think using the subheading will clarify our intent and make it easier to assess.

      Delete
    4. I went the paragraph route because I am an English person and MLA doesn't require headings. When I was writing, they sort of bled into each other like a narrative...

      Delete
  15. Hello! I almost forgot to complete this Discussion! I am slightly confused about the sub headings? What type of examples are you all including?

  16. Hi everybody! I am still looking for some more solid sources. I am curious where are you finding your best sources. What journal databases or online libraries are you using?

  17. My question would be is waiting until March 20th too long to begin implementing my project? I am having dental surgery next week and have to take a few days off so I really don't want to begin implementation and then leave for 2 to 3 days. Also, If I began now I would only have this group of students until the 20th so there would not be enough time (my classes change on a 9 weeks basis.)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have not seen any information about waiting until the 20th.
Actually I started collecting data in February. Once I knew I was headed in the right direct I got started.

      Delete
    2. I believe I read that we need at least two weeks of data collection for our project. I think as long as you've got the next two weeks at the least to implement, you should be okay. I'm running into the issue with benchmarking and upcoming testing getting in the way of small group instruction. I began two weeks ago with data collection, but the next few weeks I'll be pulled out for assessment. I am hoping this does not affect my project validity.

  18. In looking over "EDUC 6395 Action Research Project Step by Step Process", It states that we should have a minimum of 8 expert sources; however, I also noticed that in the Module 3 overview it states at least 5.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes and in some places it mentions three sources. There has been some discussions about that issue. But, the rubric states 5 or more. I would follow the rubric - 5 or more. Good Luck!

      Delete
    2. I think in module 3 it actually says that you have to have a minimum of 5 strong resources. Hope this helps!

      Delete
    3. I was going for 8, but I ended up with just 6 scholarly sources. The rubric says at least 5.

  19. I see where we are supposed to submit this assignment and include all three of our completed pieces. But, I'm not quite sure of the order. We created the Introduction and the method. Now, we are layering on the Literature Review. But in the syllabus it mentions Introduction, Literature Review, Methods. Does anyone know the order? The sample of the Thesis on page 213 of the text shows the later. So, unless I hear a different answer, I'll go with this one.

  20. I found the readings the chapter 5 to be the most clear when it came to how to put together this review. I had a hard time figuring out the difference in a Literature Review and an Annotated Bibliography (from the one we just submitted in 6390 if any of you have that class). I hope I ended up doing the assignment right. I followed the guidelines in the book and looked over the example really good. It doesn't have a summary of each of the articles listed like an annotated bib. but rather supports the purpose of the study.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I am in 6390 and found it difficult as well. This was difficult for me to find the difference. I did an intro, review, and then a conclusion of how the studies related to my topic.

      Delete
    2. I am really not sure if I did the assignment correctly, either. I do not have much experience with writing a literature review. The text was very helpful but it was still overwhelming deciding which information to include, which literature was related to my research project, and what all I needed to include.

  21. Like Holly i was a little confused on the difference from the literature review and a bibliography. After reading many examples i think i figured it out. The text was helpful as was the example on page 61.

  22. I think my question or wondering is that if we don't score well on this can we add more to it before the final turn in?

    1. I hope so. I have 3 or 4 non-scholarly articles that I use in my actual implementation that I will be adding to my final paper!

    2. That's a good question: if my submission is not how a literature review should look, I don't want to be required to use it for the final submission!

  23. Dear Lord- I'm finished! I can't believe it. I thought I had another day to do all my editing and formatting, so I'm glad I looked on here last night! Anyway- I'm anxious to see how this one goes. In previous lit reviews, I had to state the relevance of the article to work as I went versus at the end, so that was a difficult transition to make.

  24. My project is based on the Orton-Gillingham teaching method. While I was doing my research, I ran into so issues with getting information that only suggest the reasons why to purchase the product. I only found 3 good resources for my literature review. I would like to have found some more information where the method was used with children and exact examples of the activities they used. Has anyone else ran into the issue of finding more advertisements for a product than the actual use of the product?

While trying to find research I had a difficult time locating articles that focused specifically on my subject. I also had difficulty finding articles that were within the 5-10 year range. I ended up using articles that discussed the importance of using games and songs to teach in general but not specifically on sight words.

When I was in college that is exactly what I needed..someone who held me accountable to get my work done. At least for my freshman year! While researching I found many colleges that require this as well! Knowing it is somewhat added into the NCAA regulations there are different methods that can be used for it.
